Recipient
An ophthalmologist will perform a comprehensive eye examination before determining whether a person can get the benefit or ready for a corneal transplant.
If the diagnosis matches the need for a transplant, the prospective corneal transplant recipient will come to the LEBJ office at JEC @ Kedoya Eye Hospital to consult with LEBJ officers. After that, the name of the prospective recipient of the cornea will be put on the waiting list.
Patients should discuss all costs with their ophthalmologist – this will include ophthalmologist fees, anesthesia, hospitalization, Lions Eye Bank Jakarta fees and others.
In general, the cost of a corneal transplant operation is around 55 million Rupiah.
When the operation will be performed depends on several factors, the most important of which is the urgency and safety of the prospective corneal transplant recipient. In addition, the availability factor of the cornea will be another topic.
There are several things that must be prepared before surgery:

- The results of laboratory, radiology, other supporting examinations support
The patient will feel discomfort in the eyes, but if the eyes are very painful, immediately tell the anesthesiologist. In addition, some patients will feel nausea from anesthesia or dizziness.
Before going home, the doctor or nurse will give post-operative instructions regarding:
- what will be felt,
- physical activities to be avoided (e.g. heavy lifting or forward bending),
- instructions for using painkillers or eye drops,
- emergency phone number,
- control time.
The initial recovery period will vary from one to three weeks after surgery. During this time, patients are advised to follow the postoperative instructions from the ophthalmologist and control according to the schedule determined by the ophthalmologist.
Warning signs If the patient's body starts to reject the transplant or there are other problems, consult an ophthalmologist immediately. Corneal transplant recipients should pay attention to the following:
- Eye redness. During the first few weeks after surgery, the eye will be red and less with time. However, if the eyes get redder, please contact an ophthalmologist.
- Light sensitivity Light sensitivity after operation will occur and will decrease gradually. If your eyes become more sensitive to light than usual, contact your eye doctor immediately.
- Deterioration of vision. Patients are advised to select an object at home to test their vision each day. If objects appear more blurred than before, then contact an eye doctor.
- Pain. A little pain during the healing process is normal. However, consult an eye doctor if your eyes hurt or throb for more than two or three hours.
Corneal transplants can restore vision in eyes that have been damaged by corneal disease. Corneal transplant success rate is over 90%, with good final visual acuity.
The factors that determine the final result are:
- Type of corneal disease (some types of corneal disease respond better to a corneal transplant than others).
- The state of the donor cornea.
- Surgical technique and skill.
- The healing ability of the recipient's cornea.
- A sensitivity reaction between the donor and recipient corneas can lead to transplant rejection.
- Presence of concomitant eye diseases such as glaucoma, retinal disease reduces the chances of a good visual outcome (Shroff Eye Centre)
Pendonor
Tidak. Hanya kornea dan sklera (bagian putih mata) sekitar 3-4mm yang diambil oleh teknisi bank mata.
Tidak. Jaringan mata akan diberikan sesuai dengan nomor antrian (waiting list) calon penerima jaringan kornea.
Tidak. Proses pengambilan jaringan kornea hanya membutuhkan waktu sekitar 30 menit. Teknisi akan melakukan pengambilan jaringan dalam waktu 15 jam setelah pendonor dinyatakan meninggal dunia oleh dokter sehingga pemakanan dapat berjalan tanpa ditunda.
Tidak. Teknisi bank mata akan sangat berhati-hati saat mengambil jaringan kornea agar memastikan tidak ada perubahan pada penampilan pendonor. Bahkan orang-orang yang melihat tidak akan sadar bahwa seseorang telah mendonasikan kornea.
Beberapa cara untuk mendaftar sebagai calon donor yaitu :
- Datang langsung ke kantor LEBJ di RS Mata JEC @ Kedoya Lantai 3 dan mengisi formulir pendaftaran yang akan dibantu oleh staf LEBJ
- Mengisi form secara online di website www.jec.co.id/lebj
- Mendatangi booth LEBJ di event dan mengisi form yang akan dibantu oleh staf LEBJ
Tidak. Kegiatan menjual beli organ dan jaringan manusia melanggar hukum.
Tidak. Semua biaya pengambilan jaringan kornea akan ditanggung oleh bank mata.
Tidak. Sesuai dengan peraturan, identitas pendonor dan penerima jaringan akan dirahasiakan. Namun, jika ada yang ingin berkomunikasi antara pihak penerima atau pendonor, maka bank mata dapat memfasilitasi melalui surat menyurat anonim.
Sampel darah calon pendonor akan diperiksa untuk adanya penyakit menular seperti HIV, Hepatitis B, Syphillis. Jika dinyatakan tidak aman, jaringan tersebut tidak digunakan untuk transplantasi, hanya digunakan untuk riset atau pendidikan. Bank mata sangat mementingkan keselamatan dan kesehatan calon penerima jaringan kornea dan petugas bank mata kami.
Donasi jaringan kornea adalah sebuah perbuatan amal yang dapat memulihkan pengelihatan mereka yang buta akibat kerusakan kornea. Sebagian besar agama mengajarkan untuk berbuat amal dan berbagi kepada sesama. Jika anda masih ragu, hubungi ketua agama setempat.
Pada sebagian besar kasus, bisa. Tidak semua kasus pengelihatan jelek disebabkan oleh kelainan pada kornea, bisa jadi karena lensa, retina atau saraf. Untuk transplantasi kornea, hanya dibutuhkan kornea, sehingga kornea Anda tetap bisa untuk memulihkan pengelihatan penerima jaringan.
Bisa. Menjalani operasi LASIK ataupun katarak bukan sebuah larangan untuk menjadi calon pendonor.
Tidak. Dokter yang merawat Anda berbeda dengan tim yang akan mengambil jaringan kornea. Dokter yang merawat Anda akan tetap berusaha semaksimal mungkin untuk mengobati Anda sesuai dengan peraturan dan ketentuan medis.
Ya. Keluarga Anda perlu tahu agar tidak terjadi kesalahpahaman saat teknisi bank mata mendatangi keluarga Anda untuk pengambilan jaringan kornea. Setelah mendaftar, Anda akan menerima Stiker (dapat ditempelkan di mobil atau dirumah) dan hologram (dapat ditempelkan di kartu identitas seperti KTP/ Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas (KITAS) bagi WNA) untuk menandakan bahwa Anda terdaftar sebagai calon pendonor.
Transplantasi kornea adalah tindakan operasi transplant yang paling sering dilakukan diseluruh dunia. Sejak tahun 1961, telah dilakukan lebih dari 1,800,000 operasi transplantasi kornea, memulihkan pengelihatan manusia, dari umur 9 hari hingga 103 tahun.
Kornea yang telah diambil akan dimasukkan kedalam cairan pengawet yang mampu mempertahankan jaringan tersebut sampai dilakukan transplantasi kornea selama maksimal 2 minggu. Setelah 2 minggu, kualitas jaringan tersebut akan mulai menurun, sehingga tidak optimal bila dilakukan operasi.
Syarat menjadi calon donor adalah mendapat persetujuan dari keluarga dan mengisi formulir calon donor.
