What is Eye Bank?

An eye bank is a non-profit organization that organizes donor events from sample collection to management and distribution of human cornea tissue till transplantation. An eye bank is obligated to ensure that all processes of cornea tissue will go smoothly and according to standards to provide high-quality tissue, leading to an increase in cornea transplantation success rate.

The donated cornea tissue, coupled with the disorder and social history of the donor, will be evaluated by the eye bank using the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) international standard. Only tissue fulfilling the criteria will be used in transplantation.

Vision

Reduce cases of cornea blindness in Indonesia to improve patient's quality of life through high-quality cornea tissue transplantation

Mission

1. Organize the flow and ways of providing cornea supply, starting from cornea collection to its distribution, so the process goes smoothly

2. Enhance the knowledge of cornea and how to register as a potential donor

3. Build EDC (Eye Donation Center) outside the Jabodetabek area to increase the number of corneas

4. Maintain communication and collaboration with foreign eye banks so LEBJ has proper guidelines and regulations by the international standard

Background

In Indonesia, it is predicted that 1 in 1000 people suffers blindness due to cornea damage. Cornea transplantation can solve this problem if the condition doesn't improve with medication. With rapid technological development, the success rate of cornea transplantation is >90%. Ophthalmologists in Indonesia can do the transplantation procedure; however, the number of operations still needs to be higher due to the minimal cornea tissue supply available in Indonesia, especially cornea tissue from a local citizen. Therefore, we still rely on other countries to supply cornea tissue.

Challenge

Economy challenge Loss of sight will decrease the ability to do work. Blind citizens will rely on a caregiver.

Education If children cannot see, their education will also be hindered. Without education, they won't have enough knowledge and skills to work in the coming days, thus risking a less ideal future.

Facility In Indonesia, the facility for the blind community is limited. Not all cities in Indonesia are equipped with a yellow line on the crossroad to guide blind people to walk safely.

Productivity Rate The country's productivity will decrease if tons of productive people cannot work.
