JEC Eye Hospital @ Menteng Launches Strabismus Surgery Center for Children and Adults

To commemorate World Strabismus Day on August 10, JEC Eye Hospital @ Menteng officially launched its Strabismus Surgery Center, a dedicated facility providing comprehensive diagnosis, non-surgical therapy, and surgical treatment for children and adults with strabismus. The new center strengthens JEC's subspecialty eye care services while expanding public access to advanced strabismus treatment.

What Is Strabismus?

Strabismus, commonly known as crossed or misaligned eyes, occurs when the eyes fail to look in the same direction simultaneously. One eye may turn inward, outward, upward, or downward, affecting binocular vision, depth perception, and, in children, increasing the risk of amblyopia (lazy eye) if left untreated.

Beyond visual impairment, strabismus can also affect confidence, social interaction, and overall quality of life for both children and adults.

Comprehensive Strabismus Care

The Strabismus Surgery Center provides integrated services delivered by Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus specialists. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient's condition and clinical needs.

Available services include:

  • Comprehensive eye examinations.
  • Binocular vision and stereopsis assessment using Synoptophore, TNO Test, and Fly Test.
  • Prescription glasses and prism lenses.
  • Amblyopia (patching) therapy.
  • Vision therapy.
  • Eye muscle surgery when medically indicated.

Eye Muscle Surgery Focuses on Restoring Vision

Strabismus surgery is performed not merely to improve appearance but to restore binocular vision, reduce double vision, improve eye coordination, and enhance daily visual function. Each surgical plan is individually designed based on the patient's diagnosis, age, eye deviation, and overall health condition.

Recognizing the Types and Symptoms of Strabismus

Strabismus may present as:

  • Esotropia (eye turns inward).
  • Exotropia (eye turns outward).
  • Hypertropia (eye turns upward).
  • Hypotropia (eye turns downward).

Other forms include latent, intermittent, and alternating strabismus.

Common warning signs include:

  • Misaligned eyes.
  • Frequent head tilting.
  • Closing one eye while focusing.
  • Difficulty judging distances.
  • Double vision.
  • Eye deviation visible in photos or videos.

Sudden onset strabismus, especially when accompanied by headache, vomiting, or neurological symptoms, requires immediate medical evaluation.

Early Detection Is Essential

Early diagnosis allows timely treatment, helping children develop healthy vision while reducing the risk of permanent amblyopia. Parents are encouraged to seek professional eye examinations whenever signs of eye misalignment are observed.
